Measuring Knowledge Retention from Virtual Instructor-Led Training

The rapid shift to virtual instructor-led training (VILT) in recent years has accelerated learning accessibility. However, a key question persists - how effectively are learners retaining the knowledge? Without proactive measurement, it is easy to assume information imparted translates into skills gained.

Start by setting clear learning objectives covering the exact knowledge and competencies learners should retain from virtual sessions. Survey participants before and after to gauge perception shifts on how much they improved in each learning area.

Schedule knowledge checks through online quizzes and assignments timed 2-3 weeks after completion when retention rates dip. Even 5-10 minute micro-assessments can validate understanding. Repeat such touch points at 6 months and beyond to track long-term retention.

For mission critical skills, consider proctored skills assessments administered virtually. Observe learners actually performing taught techniques to assess competency rather than just multiple choice tests.

Evaluate application on the job through manager feedback and tracking performance metrics.

Correlate VILT participation with tangible outcomes like projects completed, sales results, quality benchmarks, and employee engagement scores.

Surveys should also measure learner confidence on applying virtual training to real work. Identify potential adoption barriers like lack of reinforcement, inadequate tools, or insufficient practice opportunities.

Data will vary across learning modalities. Compare retention between live vs. recorded virtual sessions and active vs. passive activities. Shorter burst trainings may outperform prolonged ones.

Leverage analytics from the virtual platform itself - video completion rates, session attendance frequency, engagement tracker, resource downloads and more.

While improving knowledge retention requires a concerted effort, the ROI surpasses traditional end-of-training surveys. The insights gained allow for continual optimization of content, delivery, and program structure to maximize VILT effectiveness. What gets measured gets managed.
